October 13, 2024Today is the Feast Day of our Patron Saint, Edward the Confessor! Edward was King of England from 1042 until his natural death on January 5th, 1066. He was much loved both in life and after his death, and was regarded as the Patron Saint of England until the 1270s. He was officially canonized in 1161 by Pope Alexander III, but was widely regarded as a saint in England shortly after his death because of the many miracles that were reported to happen at his tomb. The title "confessor" denotes that he lived a holy life, but was not martyred.St. Edward's Hall at Notre Dame says this, "Entrusted with absolute power, Edward could have been a cruel tyrant like many of his peers and predecessors. However, he proved to be a Christ-like sovereign for his kingdom. He strove for peace and avoided bloodshed if at all possible. He cared for his subjects both temporally with alms and spiritually by building churches and abbeys. Edward also lived a devout and pious personal life..."He is celebrated in both the Catholic and Anglican Churches; Westminster Abbey, which is among the many he built or rebuilt and is buried in, holds a special pilgrimage in the days surrounding October 13th.
